Home Start: Social Enterprise and National Runaway & Homeless Youth Prevention Month

November 2, 2015

Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away in a year. If all of these young people lived in one city, it would be the fifth largest city in the United States. These numbers are unacceptable, particularly when you consider the fact that many of these young people will end up on the streets. By supporting Home Start and shopping at our Thrift Boutique, you are showing San Diego’s homeless youth that they are not invisible and they are NOT alone.

When a youth is homeless, the impact is felt throughout the entire community. All of us—individuals, businesses, community groups, teachers, elected officials, and human service agencies—are encouraged to make a difference to help these young people develop life skills and get them back on their feet. By working together we can have a collective impact on the successes of these youth who really need direction. That is why Home Start created the Maternity Shelter Program in an effort to get these young women off the streets so they can thrive.

The Maternity Shelter Program provides safe, secure and supportive housing with intensive case management services for pregnant and parenting young women who are between 18 and 24 years old, and their dependent children. These vulnerable families are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless.

Services provided to the residents at the Maternity Shelter Program include: stable housing, evidence-based parenting skills, mental health services, job training resources, and nutrition/health education. If you shop at our Thrift Boutique, you are stopping that cycle and supporting the prevention that is already taking action. Moreover, in this month of November, we will be giving you 15 % off your purchase if you mention HomeAid San Diego at check out! We are also looking for donations, and volunteers too!
