About Victorian Heights:
The eight-unit apartment complex in National City is home to 36 women and children, who without housing and support services would otherwise be homeless. Victorian Heights provides a unique blend of services for mothers who have experienced domestic violence, successfully completed substance abuse recovery programs and are now enrolled in court-ordered family reunification programs. The newly renovated apartments provide a setting where families can focus on rebuilding relationships and plan for the future. Each apartment was outfitted with new kitchen cabinets, appliances, flooring, bathroom upgrades and furnishings throughout. On the exterior, all of the units received a fresh coat of paint and new roof. A new kids clubhouse was created out of an existing garage space. The kids clubhouse features a homework and computer learning center, play area for younger kids and family counseling space. A former client described how the program changed her life: "Victorian heights helped me learn to live life on life's terms. While living there, I became stronger and more assertive. It was a safe enviornment where there was no drug activity and it assisted me to stay sober no matter what happened. Also, Victorian Heights gave me a more confident outlook about being a single mom, and speaking out for what I believe in"

House of Rachel

Care Provider: Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego
Beds: 5
Groundbreaking: September 20, 2002
Dedication
Date: December 12, 2002

About House of Rachel:
House of Rachel provides a safe, sober and supportive home for women 50 years of age and older who are in an economic and personal transition. The home provides an environment that promotes community living for women who are seeking training, employment and permanent housing. Builder Captain Colrich Communities fully renovated the five bedroom shelter, creating a warm and supportive home for older homeless women to work toward self-sufficiency.

Since 1936, the role of Catholic Charities has been to provide social welfare programs, to be a witness to the scriptural values of mercy and justice, and to advocate for the poor and vulnerable within the diocese.
Sandra, a client at House of Rachel stated, "When I came to the House of Rachel I was desperate, scared, confused and depressed. I was given a home,a real home, the most beautiful home I've ever lived in and I'm 54 years old. I had a bed, a kitchen right out of Better Homes and Gardens. I was given food and support that no one has ever given me. It's always been me taking care of other people. I didn't know that there was actually a place that would take care of me when I needed help. It is hard to say how much gratitude I have and how much better I feel about myself when I don't have to say I'm homeless."
