Shelter
Projects
The Heart of What We Do
Every shelter project that HomeAid
San Diego undertakes is a team effort that unites the resources
of the building industry with non-profit organizations that serve
the region’s homeless. HomeAid San Diego starts each new
project by selecting a qualified non-profit partner. The non-profit
partner must have a proven track record of services to the homeless
and be in need of new or renovated shelter facility.
Next, we match the non-profit partner with a leading homebuilder (“Builder
Captain”) that is seeking a tangible way to give back to the community
by volunteering to spearhead a HomeAid project. The volunteer Builder Captain
is the centerpiece of the HomeAid program. The Builder Captain coordinates
the construction of the shelter and secures the in-kind donations of labor
and materials from their trade partners necessary to complete the project.
To qualify for Home Aid’s Shelter Assistance Program, non-profit organizations
must provide transitional shelter services within San Diego County and have:
- A
mission to assist the temporarily homeless;
- Strong
community and political support;
- A
good track record of enabling clients to attain a stable lifestyle
and obtain long-term independent housing;
- Operational
funding in place to support client programs;
- Capital
funds available or the capability to raise the necessary funding
to ensure completion of the project.
