Martha Guy has an active legal practice representing clients in transactional real estate matters. With her background in both top-tier law firms and in major in-house roles, Ms. Guy is uniquely able to bring both sophisticated legal experience and a business-oriented focus and efficiency to legal issues and negotiations. Ms. Guy represents owners and developers of real property in acquisitions, dispositions, general development-related matters, represents landlords and tenants in leasing transactions of all types and advises clients in negotiating and drafting of contractor, architect and other agreements.


Prior to beginning her own practice, Ms. Guy was Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Newland Communities (2001-2007), the largest private master-planned community developer in North America. There, Ms. Guy represented and advised the Company with respect to all of its legal needs– including portfolio and land acquisitions, investor and financing arrangements, complex litigation matters, and all development and operational legal matters for the over 60 projects owned and developed by Newland. Previous to her general counsel role, Ms. Guy practiced in-house for (i) TrizecHahn Development Corporation, a national developer and operator of regional retail centers, where she served as development counsel for the Hollywood & Highland and Paseo Colorado redevelopment projects and (ii) OliverMcMillan Company, a developer of mixed-use projects within California, where she led numerous leasing, financing and development project efforts.

Ms. Guy’s law firm experience was gained at two well-respected law firms. Ms. Guy began her career in 1983 as a member of the Real Estate/Transactional Department of Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye (now DLAPiper). Thereafter, during the early 1990’s, she was a member of the Real Estate and Leasing Practice Groups of Allen, Matkins, Leck, Gamble & Mallory.

Ms. Guy received her Juris Doctor degree from University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1983 where she was an Editor of the Hastings Law Journal and her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1979.

Ms. Guy is married to another attorney, Charlie Hoge, and they have two daughters, Catherine (20) and Emily (15). They live in La Jolla, California.
