San Pasqual Academy Project
San Pasqual Academy is a first-of-its-kind residential education campus for high
school foster youth. San Pasqual offers its students a wide range of support
and activities including career services and work experience, sports activities,
an agricultural program, computer and graphics training, alumni housing and
mentorship of seniors. Since its opening in 2001, San Pasqual has achieved
notable success with its program, exceeding average high school graduation rates
for the overall population. Its success has attracted attention from government
agencies and private nonprofit organizations around the country.
The Academy currently is at its residential capacity of 136 students. The San
Diego County Board of Supervisors encouraged the addition of additional
residential units so more foster youth could benefit from the program. In the
spring of 2006 at the request of Supervisor Ron Roberts, HomeAid San Diego was
asked to become involved to help build residential buildings to house 48
additional students, six houseparent apartments and a “commons” building that
provides meeting and recreational space for the residents. The project design
was completed by Kevin Nivinskus of Studio E Architects with significant input
from Supervisor Roberts. The San Pasqual Academy Foundation, a nonprofit
organization formed to provide funding for capital needs at the Academy took
responsibility for funding the project.
Fairfield Residential agreed to become the Builder Captain, through the efforts
of Jerry Brand and Debbie Ruane. Fairfield assembled a construction team lead
by Wayne Laliberte, Warren Pedersen as Project Manager for Fairfield
Residential, Jeff Bening as Assistant Project Manager, and Virgil Whitehead as
Superintendent. The project leads had the support of an entire group of
experienced staff each of whom demonstrated the expertise and experience that
has made Fairfield successful for over 20 years.
We celebrated the groundbreaking on February, 6, 2008 and as a result of
Fairfield’s professional management and the support of the following
subcontractors, this project was completed ahead of schedule in mid
December 2008.
