South Bay Community Services: Adopt a Family for the Holidays

November 24, 2015

South Bay Community Services (SBCS) believes that every community needs a place where those in need can find hope and create the best life possible. That’s way, since 1971, SBCS has provided responsive services to create a pathway to self-sufficiency.

We don’t do it alone. Through donations of time, talents and treasures, SBCS is able to provide the most comprehensive services touching the lives of more than 50,000 each year.

One such program is Mi Escuelita Therapeutic Preschool, for children affected by domestic violence. Many of these little ones are residing in our emergency shelters or living with foster families or kinship parents.

When children come to us, they are scared and confused. The effect of domestic violence on children, whether they witness or have been physically abused, impacts their development, mental health, education and future. These young victims are at higher risk for substance abuse, failure in school, aggressive behavior or depression. Studies show that more than half of school age children in domestic violence shelters show clinical levels of anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder.

At Mi Escuelita, children learn to become the kind of children they were meant to be before the violence. After a few months, children are smiling and developing true friendships and trusting relationships with the adults in their lives that we know will sustain over time.

“The change in attitude is night and day,” shared Juan Medina, grandparent raising two Mi Escuelita students and whose daughter was murdered due to domestic violence. “My granddaughter is  now little by little accepting … the fear is fading … I see her real self come out. She is a very lovable little girl. I thank Mi Escuelita for this.”

From therapeutic healing for our little ones; to housing and support for youth who have aged out of the foster care system; to shelter for homeless families – all find hope at SBCS because of our supporters.

This year, we invite you to be a FORCE FOR GOOD.

The holidays are especially hard for those struggling. Your support will help us provide vital services for children and families escaping domestic violence; support to current and former foster youth learning to live independently; and services for homeless families.

We know the FORCE IS STRONG IN YOU. To celebrate this, when you join THE FORCE through your donation, you will receive an email link with your personalized FORCE FOR GOOD social media profile badges and banners so you can brand your accounts, celebrate THE FORCE in you, and inspire others this holiday season.

Size of gift matters not.  Together, we can change statistics.

To donate, please visit www.SouthBayCommunityServices.org and click on Give Today or call us directly at (619) 420-3620.

Thank you for making our community stronger.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Lembo
