STEP UP! is a virtual 5K walk or run event, it is open to the public and we highly encourage families with children, company employees, community groups and fitness gurus to sign up! What a great way to get moving while helping those in need across San Diego.
To keep everyone safe during the pandemic our 2020 event will be held virtually in locations across the county instead of at a single spot as we did for 2019 at Mission Bay Park. This allows participants to build awareness about homelessness in more cities across San Diego and show their support in their own neighborhoods.
STEP UP! covers six days starting Sunday, November 1 and finishing up on Friday, November 6 to offer our participants a chance to choose the best day, time and location that suits their needs. We hope this multi-day event will allow families with children, company employees, community groups and fitness buffs the opportunity to participate in one or more days while sporting their STEP UP! Walk t-shirt and signage.
Every step counts in this fight to end homelessness across San Diego. Join HomeAid San Diego in partnership withand NAIOP as we raise awareness and funds to build more housing and shelters for San Diego’s homeless men, women and children.

For 2020, we want to hear from each of you about why homeless lives matter and why we should work harder to see that every person has a warm bed to sleep in every night.
As a NEW competition, we are encouraging students in grades 3-12 as well as the general public to create one of the following: a short film, poem, song, painting, poster or street art that answers one of the following questions:
– Why do Homeless Lives Matter in San Diego?
– How does homelessness impact our San Diego communities?
– Why are YOU walking or running to help end homelessness?
– What ideas do you have for trying to reduce the number of homeless living unsheltered in San Diego?
HomeAid San Diego will select submissions to share on HomeAid San Diego’s Facebook Page, on YouTube and on our website in the weeks leading up to the event.
Additionally, the top three submissions will win:
First Place – $300 donation to a nonprofit supporting the homeless in San Diego, name recognition with your entry shared on HomeAid San Diego’s website, social channels and with the local media
Second Place – $200 donation to a nonprofit supporting the homeless in San Diego, name recognition with your entry shared on HomeAid San Diego’s website, social channels and with local media

Through the generosity of commercial real estate professionals, builders, their trade partners, and our donors and supporters, HomeAid San Diego builds multi-unit housing for the homeless in partnership with charities such as Promises2Kids, Catholic Charities, Interfaith Community Services, Home Start, Inc.,Casa de Amparo, Serving Seniors, North County Lifeline and others who own and operate the shelters. These charities provide social services that enable residents to move beyond their temporary homeless situation to become self-sufficient.
Established in 2002, HomeAid San Diego is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to building multi-unit housing for San Diego’s temporarily homeless men, women and children. The organization is supported by an alliance of local and national building and commercial real estate industry organizations and companies.
Under the leadership of Builder Captains, HomeAid San Diego develops projects with the support of trade partners and volunteers. Once they are completed, professional service providers take up the baton by providing services that help residents regain strength and purpose in a safe environment.
Unlike any time in America’s history, today’s homeless are primarily women, children, and families. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of today’s homeless are not the people seen on the street – They are the “Invisible Homeless” who are without a place to live due to unforeseen life circumstances. They are parents who had to choose between paying the rent or paying for a daughter’s medicine; they are mothers who removed their children from abusive fathers; they are parents who lost their job because a manufacturer closed a plant; they are pregnant teens who were thrown out by angry parents; they are emancipated foster youth without a place to live or a means of support; they are senior citizens and veterans who no longer have a family to care for them; they are abused children removed from their homes for their safety; they are veterans returning from recent wars.
