About Veteran's Transitional Housing
HomeAid San Diego and Interfaith Community Services formed an alliance to
renovate an existing apartment complex in Oceanside, California to provide
transitional housing for up to 72 veterans. Oceanside, California is home to
the 125,000 acre Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corp’s largest West Coast base. The
average daytime population of Camp Pendleton is 60,000 and over 38,000 family
members of military personnel live on base. Camp Pendleton alone accounts for
over 2% of all jobs in San Diego County.
While living in the transitional housing, the veterans will complete a
comprehensive program designed to advance each individual’s medical,
psychological, social, relationship and job skills needs leading to
independence, self-sufficiency and a successful reentry to mainstream society.
The unit renovations were largely cosmetic in nature, including safety
enhancements. The enhancements were:
19 units - new kitchen cabinets, appliances, garbage disposals and fire
extinguishers
19 units – new bathroom sinks and vanities, low flush toilets and some will
require new shower/tub combos.
19 units – installation of GFI outlets, replacement of water heater tanks with
instant water heaters, smoke detectors in each bedroom and kitchen/living room
area (55 total), new door hardware, new window blinds and painting and general
cosmetic repairs
5 units – retrofitted exhaust fans
2 units – upgraded to fully ADA compliant and accessible.
In addition, general project repairs were performed:
Exterior minor repair and painting, minor plumbing repairs in approximately 20
locations, repair of some roof flashing and rain gutters, new signage and
lighting for walkways.
The project was dedicated on July 15, 2008. Competitive Edge Construction
provided an onsite construction superintendent and local congregations and
marine personnel donated their skills and time to complete the project. HomeAid
San Diego obtained $35,000 of in-kind donations.
