About Carol's House
The eight-unit apartment complex in National City is home to 36 women and children, who without housing and support services would otherwise be homeless. Victorian Heights provides a unique blend of services for mothers who have experienced domestic violence, successfully completed substance abuse recovery programs and are now enrolled in court-ordered family reunification programs. The newly renovated apartments provide a setting where families can focus on rebuilding relationships and plan for the future. Each apartment was outfitted with new kitchen cabinets, appliances, flooring, bathroom upgrades and furnishings throughout. On the exterior, all of the units received a fresh coat of paint and new roof. A new kid’s clubhouse was created out of an existing garage space. The kid’s clubhouse features a homework and computer learning center, play area for younger kids and family counseling space.
Service Providers
“I think one of the most powerful examples was our new client who moved in
without having any furniture or belongings. Her daughter and she only had
clothes. When she moved in she called me and was crying. She
couldn’t believe how blessed her daughter and she were. She has spent the
last year trying to get her life back together and having a hone of her own is
something she hasn’t had since her abusive husband and she split almost two
years ago. Now her daughter and she have their own rooms versus sleeping
on someone’s couch. Before HomeAid and Standard Pacific teamed up on Victorian
Heights, families received donations and used items to create their home.
Now families have a new home with new furniture to start a new life. This is
something to feel good about.”
- Katie Ray-Jones, Director Family Wellness and Sell-Sufficiency, South Bay
Community Services
“We can’t thank you enough for the wonderful experience of working with HomeAid.
Victorian Heights is a major accomplishment and would not have been done with
your support.”
- Stymie Ohlson, Director of Development, South Bay Community Services
“Standard Pacific’s commitment is an extreme example of community involvement.
Not only does it reflect their dedication but it has also created a remarkable,
new environment for our residents to call home and realize their potential in.
SBCS now proudly owns a showcase, apartment complex and National City directly
benefits as one of its city blocks has been greatly improved.
- Kathryn Lembo, Executive Director, South Bay Community Services
“Well, to be honest, I was anxious to see what wonders had been done to this
place where rats had wined an dined at one point in time, and at the same time I
was a bit scared to leave Chula Vista and to move to National City. I was
amazed and full of joy because everything was so beautiful and well coordinated.
Sometimes in life we can only wonder on how it must be to have a place
this nice for ourselves and our children, but it stays only as a dream that most
likely won’t come true due to many obstacles that life gives us. But today
I can actually say that my children and I have been fortunate enough to be part
of this once in a lifetime opportunity to say, ‘This is my home, come on in and
make yourself comfortable’ and receive nothing but positive comments on how nice
it looks. I’m forever going to be thankful to everyone who participated in
this project and South Bay Community Services for giving me a chance to live in
such a wonderful apartment. There are no words that can describe my
appreciation, but only one action – to keep this apartment as it was given to me
out of respect to everyone whose money and time will forever be appreciated.”
