Educational 5K walk bringing together SD housing industry, homeless service providers and community members to discuss current and new initiatives to fight homelessness.

(SAN DIEGO) September 13, 2019 – San Diego-based Avalon Bay Communities presents HomeAid San Diego’s inaugural STEP UP! Walk to End Homelessness 5K on October 27, 2019 at De Anza Cove, Mission Bay Park.

In partnership with NAIOP, this educational walk will bring together real estate industry members, builders and their trades, area non-profit homeless service providers, and community members from across San Diego County to build awareness about the serious issues facing San Diego’s homeless population.  The event encourages candid discussions about current and future housing initiatives for San Diego’s homeless men, women and children.

“With over 8,100 homeless men, women and children across San Diego county and over 50 percent of them living unsheltered, HomeAid San Diego is committed to bringing together the skills and resources of the real estate and building industry with homeless social service providers to create long-term housing solutions for those in need,” stated Alexis Parker, HomeAid San Diego’s Executive Director.

“We developed this inaugural 5K Walk to advocate, educate and inspire more San Diegan’s to get involved in helping to end the homeless epidemic, and to encourage real estate industry members to see the benefits of supporting housing for all initiatives in San Diego,” Parker added.

“NAIOP San Diego is banding together with HomeAid San Diego and commercial real estate industry members across the county to fight homelessness,” said Karen Burges, NAIOP San Diego Foundation Executive Director. “San Diego has the 4th largest homeless population in the U.S. yet also has one of the country’s strongest commercial real estate markets.  San Diegan’s with a means to help should ‘STEP UP’ on October 27 to bring an end to the thousands living on the streets of San Diego. Every step counts so join us!”

Friends and families of all ages are encouraged to come out for a morning walk and meet up with others who are working every day to help the homeless have their basic needs met.
